Chapter Seventeen

Kayla had ditched her wig and glasses in one of the communal bins, putting them in a carrier bag beneath a load of black sacks. She was Vicky no more, and to be honest, she was relieved. Cooper had fucked off out, hadn’t even stayed in to see how this morning had gone or sent a message, and she was a bit hurt by that. Never mind, he was likely out selling drugs to make enough money for them to go on a little jolly. Spain would be nice.

She jumped at a hard knock on the door. Jesus, was it Everett? He was a dick if he’d come round here. They’d had no contact since she’d messaged him earlier, so perhaps he’d had the police round. She wandered down the hallway, spying two big shapes behind the mottled glass in the front door. Maybe he’d brought Boycie with him.

She opened up and gaped, her stomach bottoming out. “I haven’t done anything wrong, I swear. I’ve got a fella now, and I haven’t accused anyone of pinching my arse.”

“We’re not here about that.” George barged past her, Greg following.

She closed the door, panicking. She had to message Cooper so he didn’t come home while they were here, but how could she do it without these two asking questions about it? He looked nothing like he had as Parker, but she couldn’t risk him walking in, blurting something, then seeing the twins too late.

“I’ve got to reply to my mate,” she said. “She’s just asked if I want to go round for dinner. If I don’t text back, she’ll ring.”

They went into the kitchen, and she remained in the hallway, frantically passing on the news to Cooper, telling him not to reply. She deleted the text string then popped the phone inside her bra.

In the kitchen, she went towards the kettle. “Do you want a drink?”

“Not unless it’s cold.” George leaned against her sink unit, arms folded.

“I’ve got cans of Coke.”

“That’ll do.”

She opened the fridge and took two out, passing them over, then grabbed her own. Pulling the tab to give herself time to get composed, she sat at the small table with Greg.

“Where’s Vicky?” George asked.

Even though she’d told them Vicky had been staying here, now she was Kayla, should she ask how they knew? Would it be weird if she didn’t?

“How come you know about her? Have you been keeping tabs on me?” What if they had? Oh God.

George tsked. “Just answer the fucking question.”

“She moved out about an hour ago. She’s gone back to Essex.”

“How do you know her?”

Her stomach rolled over. “I met her in a pub—I think it was yours. We had a laugh, and she said she’d been in some refuge or other, hiding from her boyfriend, but she’d left there and needed somewhere to stay before she went back home. Something about her bloke being caught and being put in the nick? I got the gist she’d grassed him up and needed to wait for him to be arrested before she could leave London.
